Frequently asked questions
TRACK SCHOOL - GENERAL
Yes, many of our students are seasoned racers who are looking to hone or refresh their skills, improve their finishing position or are looking for tenths on the track. You may also consider joining us for one of our Driver - Online Video Coaching Programs.
All track lapping sessions offer consecutive laps and are 20 -30 minutes in duration, depending on the track schedule for the day. Laps are timed during the race school and during our full day high performance driving school. In-car lap timers are allowed, unless the instructor feels like the timer is a distraction to the driver.
Track time and seat time are important so that you can apply the advanced driving and racing techniques learned in the classroom sessions. Our schools offer the following amount of track time:
Yes, passing is allowed, although in the interest of safety, we do our best to keep students well separated while on the track so that passing is not necessary while students are learning and implementing new driving / racing techniques. Passing drills and practice starts are included in the race school.
No, students may spin or go ‘off track’ when learning new driving skills in a track environment. Safety is paramount however, and while we don’t encourage spins or driving off the track, we do understand that it can be a normal part of track driving and the learning process when a student is trying hard or giving his / her all. With that said, spinning or going off track is noted by the school and may be reprimanded by the track facility.
The school will run rain or shine. Other weather conditions are monitored and decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, as appropriate. You will not lose your registration fee if we cancel the school due to weather. If we run the school in the rain however, and you choose not to participate, you will be considered a "no show" and all monies paid to the school and (most likely) to the track facility will be forfeited.
You may bring one pit crew member with you to assist you during the school. Additional family members and friends may attend the school and assist in the pits. All in attendance must sign the track liability waiver and the FAASST liability waiver. You are responsible for the behavior of everyone that you bring to the track with you.
No, as long as you have a valid street driving license, and are at least 16 years of age, you may participate in our schools. Some exceptions may apply. Cars and driver's gear must conform to and pass the appropriate tech inspection.
Unfortunately, we are no longer able to offer our 2 Day Race School due to the nature of track events and track scheduling. If you are looking for additional race instruction or if you desire to improve your
lap times or finishing position, we recommend that you join one of our Driver - Online Video Coaching programs.
How fast you drive will be up to you. However, we carefully monitor the track environment so that safety is never compromised. Due to the natural progression of the school, students learn how to approach normal high performance or competition racing speeds by the end of the day.
Our copyrighted curriculum is designed for drivers of single seat open wheel race cars, closed wheel race cars, and street cars. Therefore, in order to keep the teaching enviornment consistent among all types of drivers, you will be driving alone in your car. For decades, our students have been able to take the concepts learned during our classroom sessions and then implement them on the track without an instructor having to ride with them. It's simply not neccessary. In our full day schools, we teach you how to drive any track in any car. Therefore, if you plan on being successful in the sport, its important that you learn how to read and navigate the lines at various tracks on your own, without having to take an instructor with you all the time.
The race school requires that you bring a race prepared car to class. Street cars are ideal for our track experience and high performance schools and must pass our technical inspection, a copy of which is provided here on our website.
Racing participants must bring adequate racing gear which includes a Snell Approved (SA) helmet (SA date within 15 years of class date), race gloves, race shoes, and a two layer race suit (single layer with underwear accepted). Track experience and hiigh performance students must bring a helmet, gloves with leather (or non slip) palm, long pants, comfortable shirt and closed toe shoes. All of our students may purchase driving gear and other racing accessories directly from FAASST. Order early so that your gear will arrive in time for your class.
Race prepared cars attending our Gold Package race school must have a vehicle log book and annual tech completed by the SCCA, NASA or another well recognized sanctioned race body. Street cars attending our Silver Package high performance driving or Bronze Package track experience schools must pass our Tech Inspection which can be viewed online here.
